Evolution

Lancer Evolution, colloquially known as the Lancer Evo, LanEvo, or Evo, is a car manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors. There have been ten versions to date, and the numerical designation of the model is most commonly a roman numeral. All of them share a two liter, turbocharged engine and four-wheel drive system. Evolution models prior to version V were the officially-approved models for Mitsubishi’s efforts in the World Rally Championship’s Group a class and SCCA ProRally Championship. In order to follow these rules, the Evolution is based on the same platform as the Lancer. However, it is much more powerful than the standard Lancer, with the unibody being the only major part in common between the two.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was unique among its competitors in the World Rally Championship in that it is a homologated Group A car slightly modified to be able to race competitively against WRC class cars. They were successful in the WRC Rallies from 1996-1999, thanks to the Finn Tommi Mäkinen, for clinching the driver’s titles from 1996-1999, and the help of teammate Richard Burns for clinching the manufacturer’s championship for the first time in 1998. The Evolution however was replaced by the Lancer/Carisma GT and the Lancer WRC04. Mitsubishi pulled out of the World Rally Championship after the 2005 season with the Lancer WRC05 still being driven by a few privateers in the years following. The Lancer Evolution however still competes in the Group N category. The ‘Evo’ has starred in “The Fast and the Furious”.

The all new Lancer Evolution X sedan features a newly designed 4B11T 2.0 L turbocharged, all-aluminum inline-4 engine. Power and torque depend on the market but all versions will have at least 280 PS (205.9 kW/276.2 hp) (JDM version), the American market version will have slightly more. The UK models will be reworked by Mitsubishi UK, in accordance with previous MR Evolutions bearing the FQ badge. Options for the UK Evolutions are expected to be between 300 hp (220 kW) and 360 hp (270 kW).

Two versions of the car will be offered in the U.S. The Lancer Evolution MR, with 6-speed Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission (TC-SST). The other version is the GSR which will have a 5-speed manual transmission system. The car has also a new full-time all-wheel drive system named S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control), an advanced version of Mitsubishi’s AWC system used in previous generations. The S-AWC uses torque vectoring technology to send different amount of torque to any wheel at any given time.

Audi R8

The Audi emblem with its four rings signifies one of Germany’s oldest automobile manufacturers. It symbolises the amalgamation in 1932 of four formerly independent motor-vehicle manufacturers: Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer. These companies formed the roots of what is today AUDI AG.

The Audi R8 TDI Le Mans produces 500 PS (493 hp/368 kW) and 1,000 N·m (738 ft·lbf) of torque. It uses Audi’s Quattro permanent four-wheel drive system, and is mid-engined. It has a six-speed manual gearbox. It goes from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds, and its top speed is 202 mph (325 km/h).

The Audi R8 TDI Le Mans has modified suspension settings and brakes, to cope with the added power and weight (300 kg (661.4 lb)) as a result of replacing the standard V8 engine with the V12 TDI. The V12 TDI requires more cooling than the standard R8, hence the NACA duct in the roof to feed additional air in to the engine. The vents on the front and back of the car have also been increased by 20% in size. The headlights are all-LED. For its appearance at the Detroit Motor Show, Audi fitted 20-inch alloy wheels. The rear bulkhead has been moved forward in order to accommodate the V12, meaning it loses the space behind the rear seats usually found on the standard R8.

The Audi R8 itself has gained a lot of awards to prove that it is one car that you should go for. It was announced as the Best Handling Car and Fastest Car in the World of 2007 by Autocar magazine. The 2008 Car of the Year Award was also given to R8 by Playboy Magazine. The R8 was awarded World Performance Car of the Year and World Design Car of the Year.

INFINITY

In 1989 the Infiniti brand was introduced in the United States. Its purpose back then, as it is now, was to create and sell premium vehicles in the United States that wouldn’t have otherwise fit in with Nissan’s more mainstream image. The Infiniti was created around the same time as Japanese rivals Toyota and Honda’s luxury brands, Lexus and Acura respectively, were introduced in the U.S. The sales were disappointing, a fact many attribute to some of Infiniti’s poorly received advertising at the time. The company’s initial campaign aimed to bring about brand awareness with Zen-influenced spots that focused on nature. However, the ads didn’t show the actual cars, and many believe this omission did no favors for a company that was hoping to have buyers recognize and clamor for its vehicles. Better advertising and the introduction of award-winning models eventually made Infiniti a contender in the luxury vehicle segment of the American market. Since 1989, sales have consistently grown.

In 2000, Infiniti was facing extinction. The company rededicated itself to developing a dynamic and powerful line-up of sporty luxury cars. Car and Driver reported that Infiniti executives invited members of the motoring press to a meeting where they “swore never again to take their eyes off BMW.” But this effort began with a completely redesigned Q45 flagship for the 2002 model year; it was the G35 that turned sales around for Infiniti in 2003. A sports sedan far exceeding the capabilities of its Nissan Primera-based predecessor (the G20), the Nissan Skyline-based G35 became an instant hit, named Motor Trend Car of the Year in 2003. On the release of the sport-tuned FX35/45 crossover that same year piggybacked on the G35’s success. The FX used the same components under the skin as the G35 sport coupe and was designed for American tastes. It combined sports-car handling and performance with station wagon-like versatility and all-weather capability. After a few years, a number of manufacturers began making similarly-styled vehicles, so Infiniti reclassified the FX as a Crossover utility vehicle (CUV). In 2004, Infiniti added an all-wheel drive version of the G35 sports sedan in an effort to sway buyers from similar all-wheel drive sports sedans from competitors Audi and BMW.

In 2009, the G37 coupes stay the same with two major upgrades coming down the pipe. For the first time since the G-coupe rolled off the assembly line it will be offered with Infiniti’s intelligent ATESSA E-TSÔ (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel drive system. ATESSA E-TSÔ uses an advanced torque split control strategy which transfers optimum torque to the wheels according to road and driving conditions resulting in outstanding handling due to optimum torque distribution from front to rear (50:50 up to 0:100).

2009 Lamborghini Gallardo

Lamborghini started in 1963. That same year, the very first Lamborghini, the 350GT, made its debut at the Turin Motor Show. The car’s name came from its engine size, a 3.5-liter four-cam V12. Then came the 400GT, which was produced until 1968. But it was the stunning midengine Miura, produced from 1966-’73, that catapulted Lamborghini to worldwide acclaim.

Lamborghini has released models such as the four-seat Espada and various V8 sports cars, but it is the midengine supercars that identify the marque. Models like the wild Countach and the Diablo of the 1990s are instantly recognizable as Lamborghini cars, with their sinister styling by Marcello Gandini promising equally outlandish performance. Though some may question the current German/Italian marriage, the products of this merger, the 200-mph Murcielago (the Diablo’s successor) and the equally breathtaking Gallardo, leave no doubt as to its benefit.

Now the all new 2009 Gallardo is a 2-door, 2-passenger luxury sports car, available in one trim only, the LP560-4 Coupe.

Upon introduction, the Gallardo is equipped with a standard 5.2-liter, V10, 552-horsepower engine that achieves 11-mpg in the city and 23-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional.

Lamborghini Company is also proud of the LP560-4’s improved environmental friendliness. It’s not only faster than last year’s car, it emits about 18% less carbon dioxide (327 g/km compared with 400). With that improvement comes a similar reduction in fuel consumption: on the European combined cycle, the LP560-4 achieves just over 17 mpg - last year’s car guzzled fuel at a rate of 14 mpg.
