Saab 9-X concept at Geneva Auto Show

Concept cars give out information on the possible future models of a company as these are the concrete examples of what are the capabilities of the manufacturer. American automaker General Motors (GM), for example, will introduce today at the Geneva Auto Show its new compact sports car Saab 9-X concept that supposedly will give out information on what the upcoming Saab models will be.

“The 9-X provides a picture of what the next generation of Saabs will look like,” said Bob Lutz, who is the vice chairman of GM.

The design of the Saab 9-X concept clearly depicts some aircraft features. These aircraft-like key designs will also be applied to the future cars and crossover sport utility vehicles of the GM-produced Saab. A vehicle similar to the mid-size SUV Saab 9-4X concept, which was unveiled in the Detroit-based North American International Auto Show last January, will also be part of the new models that will have aircraft features.

Aside from providing details on the future cars of the Swedish carmaker, the competent Saab 9-X is also aimed to boost the company’s sales. This compact car will provide the much needed momentum of the other Saab products that will soon hit the market.

“We are determined to grow the brand by expanding our global product portfolio into every major luxury segment. The small vehicle segment is growing,” said Jan Ake Jonsson, who is Saab’s managing director. “We think it is the right time for Saab to enter it.”

The aircraft-like design of the Saab 9-X help minimize the occurrence of air interference. Car aerodynamics is said to have vastly improved and can even lessen air drags when the speed goes over 43 miles per hour. Moreover, the concept dons a hatchback look that provides a roomier interior.

Aside from the signature spacious cabin of Saab, this concept compact sports car is equipped with an E85 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that is capable to muster up to 200-horsepower. That much strength, however, does not pose any threat to the environment as E85 is a hybrid of biofuel technology and a turbocharged engine. Motorists can expect an improved fuel economy and lesser noxious emissions with the Saab 9-X.
